Olokun Orisa of the sea & Adimu

Mysterious olokun-ohun to olokun
fresh herbs for orisa and egun worship.

Oba Olokun baba eye

King Olokun father of fish

This Ebo/Orisa is said to be a very mysterious being.  His realm is the depths of the sea.

One can call him the great Poseidon of Greek mythology.  The Yoruba legends given to us by Odu, speak of Olokun as a being of great political position and  benefactor to orisa and humankind. Many of the worship practices of Olokun did not arrive to the new world of the americas until slavery was abolished by royal decree on October 7, 1886. After this event Africans and afro-cubans were able to travel to and from the islands in freedom.

This allowed a very important women name Obatero “Ma Monserrate” to travel and return with the ikoko-secrets of Olokun including the sacred Olokun drums used to invoke this Osha. The Babalawos began to arrive shorty after to the new world bringing with them the extended versions or practices of Olokun.

Olokun is known to be undefined as male or female. If you ask the Iwos they will say its female or male or they may say it’s unkown.  Some legends in Ifa make Olokun female. Odu teaches us in the Odu Iroso-gunda (4-3) that Olokun was left undefined by Obatala. This caused a great war, a war of titans. as the pataki goes.

Obatala in adding the definitions to the world  in hast, Olokun, Osumare and Irinle asked Obatala to give them their definition, Obatala replied “ I have great work to accomplish, I will not go back in time to address your needs, I have to go forward to be able to Finish.” Once again Olokun states So you are leaving me like this? Obatala response to Olokun question “TOO BAN ESU!

Olokun in furious emotions, caused him to declare war on Obatala.  Olokun struggling with the war against Obatala’s great army asked his friend Shango for assistance. Shango in response to the request sent Olokun what is called dragons,  sending with these creatures the gift of fire breath.  Olokun then summoned his legions of armies on land and sea with a greater power, using the dragons of fire.  defeating Obatala armies.
The war lasted months, with Olokun on the winning side, Obatala and Olokun armies reaching their ends. The two Titans have their face off battle, Obatala tells Olokun “you only beat me and my armies with your creatures from the other world, Olokun responded, I had too! look how you have left me.

This is the reasoning of the confusion if Olokun is male or female. Yet this concept of male or female is a human thought. My personal opinion is a Deity is a Divinity not ruled by gender but by the deities ability to show kindness, strength, wisdom, compassion,Love. A spiritual being is Asexual if we have to frame a deity in a "descriptive word" then Asexual. Thinking this process in the mindset of Males are stronger and females serve the male etc. Is something we have added to all the Gods, God the "Supreme" we make him male gender, but to be supreme it can only be a energy. for only females birth children in our planetary species. If this is how we choose to think then the supreme is Female for all life came from, it birth all creation.
Once again this would favor more the female power. Just keep in mind that the ancestors would arrive in a new form, no choice in whom their parents would be or if the body would be a male body or female. This avatar state is why when Yemaya or Oshun or any of the other orisa, would emerge and be asked what is your name they would respond with a different name, later to be a title of that spiritual essence.

In the house of Orumila, Olokun is the benefactor of the newly initiate of Ifa.  It is Olokun that bestoles the new Ifa child with his ability not Orunmila, Orunmila gives him the directions and guides him in obtaining his triumph.  On the third day of initiation the newborn offers sacrifice, gifts to Olokun to gain his favor for without Olokun’s approval this newborn initiate will be a lost cause, having to return sooner than later back to the heavens.  Having done the offerings he then returns to the Ile to view the final process of initiation.

Olokun pleasures coming onto land and visiting the cemeteries, walking within the fog and mist, rolling on the dust of bones. The Cemetery is where he exchanges conversations with Oya (B.F.F), and her sister Iyawo (The cyclone). Here too he meets his friend Osain. I write about this because these subjects are almost tabu in our community.  Many do not know of the nine additional powers that are received with Olokun or that his pillar is in shape of a pyramid, This pillar is representation of his island home, that was rich with every kind of bird, mammal and beast one can imagine. He and his Wife “Ayaroma Elusu” ruled in pure harmony with is sons and daughters.

Olokuns Family:
Elusu
aye Shaloga
Ikoko
olosa osara
olona
bromu
Brosia
yembo

Helpers of Olokun:
the (Carpenter bird)and the (White wing Coot bird)
These two constructed the mask of Somu saga (Mask-represents LIfe)

This is why when we receive olokun there is a awon made and all sorts of offerings are given to him in remembrance and acknowledgement of his endowments. This is taken to the rivers or oceans. Olokun is the owner of all fluidic waters. All waters return to the  source of the sea.

Offering to Olokun or Yemaya: Adimu

when a situation is out of control Offering Olokun one of his favorite grants the person Olokuns blessing.

When I first started in the religion, my god mother Nancy Castro "Oshun ede" showed me this simple offering. Nancy told me "when you want to have a situation reveal itself or a person doing you harm you buy a piece of Pork fat back, or Bacon, you slow fry it, once its been rendered get two plates, place the grease in one and the Pork crisps (chicharon) on the other and offer them to Olokun, light a candle, offer him water and say aloud, after the Fatback is cooked you see the grease that remains.
Sure enough I tried it. It worked! I shortly separated from the person. Leaving me free.  Works well for a love separation needed or to reveal the face of a false friend.

Another offering Adimu:
1.Plantains with Fried Pork.

Adimu: Offerings of Blue Lapis

Holy Wood-Palo Santo

SP Banner2015-blogger.jpg

Holy Wood-Palo Santo:
scientific: Bursera graveolens

This flora is one of my favorites. I use this delightful flora for many purposes  most common use is
a incense (works great) or magic bags. I prefer to subtract its magnetic field into my medicine.
The book  entitled “El Monte” written by Linda Cabrera states that palo santo and Guayacan are one and the same but this is not true. These two trees both have great magnetic field energy but it’s different.  Palo Santos magical abilities are purifying and cleansing, it also gives a strength to the person or the enchanted item. Guayacan on the other hand, its magical abilities are the power of extended control over large amounts of distance, It has the ability to communicate with the whole forest.  The other trees and flora see the Guayacan as an authority, in respect to its authority the whole forest yields their assistance. Guayacan is the ring leader and the rest of the forest are his posse  When Guayacan is included in Nganga’s or amulets which contain other flora or elements, Guayacan is the director of the bound energy, (caldron, charm, talisman)

Palo Santo revealed

Bursera graveolens is related to Frankincense (Boswellia ) with many of the same medicinal properties, I would categorize it as frankincense south american cousin.

  1. ANTIINFLAMMATORY: internal and external
  2. RESPIRATORY SYSTEM: asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, coughs, laryngitis
  3. GENITO-URINARY SYSTEM: cystitis, dysmenorrhoea, leucorrhoea, metrorrhagia
  4. NERVOUS SYSTEM: anxiety, nervous tension and stress related conditions. Slows down and deepens breathing. Prayer, meditation
  5. SKIN CARE: blemishes, dry and mature complexions, scars, wounds, wrinkles
  6. CANCER: Variety of different  Cancers
  7. DIGESTION: stomach ailments, ulcers, including H. pylori
  8. MENTAL: Depression
Bursera graveolens can be place in your pocket or applied to one’s own magic bag to receive its electromagnetic  energy. But as with all other charms of transmission the wielder needs to learn how to access the power and energy our charms possess.  If you could tune in, tap in onto the pure energy of palo santo, you  expedite the healing of your own body or others.
The conjurers of old, used Palo Santo to exorcise the afflicted from sickness or ill will spirits. The conjurer can use Palo santo as a wand to influence the field and change the outcome of an event.  I believe this tree has an oath as the Gumbo limbo tree, to do no harm. Its abilities are pure and should not be tainted with shadow work.
LOTR___Gandalf_and_the_Balrog_by_Evolvana.jpg

There is a classic talisman, This talismans known ability is to secure the owner with a clear liberated destiny. The owner has the ability to succeed in everything they wish to pursue. You don’t find these charms readily available because its key ingredient is “Placenta”. You see in the old days when home births were common the mid-wife which were a local healer or conjurer would reserved the afterbirth in the event the child needed a lifeline in the far future. This element, this sack was the Protection, the nourisher of an individual and so it too has magical properties. This afterbirth is used to save the life of a person, but its best if its your own afterbirth. Funny looking at this practice of preserving the afterbirth in colonial times, and further back. Now in the age of science we know that this afterbirth contains DNA, and stem cells which are harvested to assist a person in the future in the event of a terminal illness. 4d-vision-anatomy-model-tarantula-spider-26112-01photo.jpg
The second ingredient is (Secret writings)
a tyrantula spider.these arachnids are great calculators, anything they hunt. Arachnids are armed with eight arm/legs giving them the security.   Spider are very sensitive to their environments, add the third main ingredient  a Scorpion sting. the other ingredients parts are kept in secret.

Oya Yansa The Market Place

Oya-Yansa
The sociology of O Ya
In honor of the children of this Orisha, OYA the Market place.

To begin on this journey of words to describe Oya, one must first understand the meaning and definition of the words that describe this force this energy of life and death. It’s greatest ability the power of Change/Transformation. For to name something is to box it, to place a label, to put confines on a concept. Humans use this process of labeling to better associate things for reference in the future. The definition or label of Oya translates to the Market Place. In Yoruba legends, Oya is the secretary of Olofin, the “Law giver” or someone that makes a judgement.  One must ask the secretary of the law giver? The Market place? What can this mean? What does it’s label refer too, what does this box contains?

We must always take time to think out of the box. We must enrich the mind and soul. We must take time off our busy lives and immerse ourselves in the mystical, the understanding of the beyond.

The "MarketPlace”, to understand this wonderful location, I would like for you to read this and then close your eyes and see these events in your minds eye.  (journey begins )You figure that something must change in your environment, food, water, supplies etc and you must travel to a location that can facilitate these needs. A place where you can exchange your goods or your labors for someone elses labors/efforts.  You set forth to your destination now a few things may arise before your arrival.

DSC_0146.JPG
(Esu) He that splits matter/things/life force/ into two. Esu is always here and there, there and nowhere.
Esu
You arrive, all about all around you, there are many different forms of life forms, energies, store shops, vendors, all with one purpose, to exchange one thing (Efforts) for another. Exchange can simple mean Transform one energy to another. I ask how can a person transform matter to another, as humans we are not as gifted, but we sure can Barter for what we like or want.

We move about this inclusion of energy, filled with so many things, some we like some we don’t, others we never even noticed, but we have a Task to complete. A Mission. We find our needs and now look for the best possible price to pay for the items/needs. We balance between that would cost the least or the one that always gives the best results. This all has a Price, a Value” a value of Labor, of Energy, of Worth. Such a simple thing, yet so complicated looking at it in this way.
Stop and look the next time you visit a mall or market and close your eyes, and feel the currents of energy that flows; energies of the vehicles, people coming and going  just in whirlwinds here there. There is lots of movement, lots of following energy :That is Oya, Oya is an exchanger, a transformer of events, a Barder, a task to complete, a Mission,  a price to pay, a value, a labor, a worth, a force like no other that comes and goes, a force that is everywhere and anywhere.
OYA  the the wind of exchange:                 ( Awon Afefe ti pashi pa aro)
The wind that births life           (Awon Afefe bibi aye)
surrounds me,protects me, all that is mine (Yika mi, aabo mi,gbogbo ti O ni mi)
You may think that Oya may not be in your presence but look again, we human beings are never the same each day, we too are on a constantly change, our bodies are always changing we shed our skin we may not see this but its happening, Our thought patterns are constantly also changing based on our environment. We lose weight, we gain weight children grow taller the ill lose a limb. the elderly pass, the younger get health or illness.

The statement “nothing is forever” is a short phrase to an ever changing current event. “Nothing is Eternal”for to be eternal is to truly be dead.  You can not be spiritual and be eternal.  Spiritually is every changing.Things in nature that seem to last or pass the test of time” become even more composed in their shapes (inert) moving less and less just as stones. Stones, mountains and diamond. There is nothing more dead than a diamond say the hindu or the guru’s of the east. because it keeps its shape or form the longest.

The being we claim to be the Creator of all things the source, which is everything is as the universe always morphing, changing, expanding, it has no end no beginning. That is Spiritual.

Now that we have a idea of this manifestation energy inboxed in the form of Oya we now can talk of her in the Yoruba concept. Many claim that Oya is death or her house is the cemetery etc, but we now know a bit better of who Oya is!  We can come to understand how in a translation from Yoruba, we can say she is death or holder of the cemetery;because in this place, begins the earthly transforming of our physical bodies to a new form, back to its spiritual state “Energy”.

The teaching of Ifa legends speak of a orisa of great beauty, of ferociousness, A women of stern feelings, a women able and capable to pick a blade, sword to engage the battle of life and death for her internal belief, a wind of change. This orisa is also embodied in the the Odu Osa Meji. The arrival of Witchery to the earth, what is witchery? (A request to speed change)(A request or plea for something to happen or occur in exchange for a price’ a effort A (sacrifice) now this word is tricky too, to sacrifice is to give of oneself, to effort at all cost for endurance, to give of one’s everything, for what? CHANGE!

I can rewrite all the legends of orissa that are already written in the logs of Ifa, and so many books that express opinions of this event or that event involving Oya but I prefer to express my understanding as what is’ What Oya role in the place we call life is.

The Origins of Oshun

The Origins of Oshun

Iʼm starting this blog to address many questions regarding the Orisa Oshun, Over the last eighteen years I have researched this topic with little finding and lots of miss guidance, My plans are to input the correct information I have gathered through the years, A lot of my teachings have come to me from yoruba worship temples and now from IFA training.I promise not to reveal in depth information, If you have questions

please feel free to write, Under the rites of IFA which contain the origins of the folklore from African tradition, states that oshun is the daughter of Olofin (The Law Giver) and Nana Buruku ( Cruel Mother-The Night Sky) Olofin only had two children one male Shango(The Divine one Olodumare Hand of Justice) one female oshun. Born on a large Clam shell arriving at the borders of the ocean and river. It is oshunʼs role entrusted by her father the art of communication from the religious priesthood's to him Olofin. the river is the dominion that suits her best, for it cites the birth and departure of life, one must cross the river of heaven to arrive on earth, it being Orisa or Human. ( I will speak more on this later ) oshun represents all that is femme, she is the owner of Honey and laughter, theses suit her well, for with her laughter she announces destruction or peril, with honey oshun is able to sweeten the most stern hearts or transform a bitter demeanor to a intoxicated lover.
The folklore goes to state that she had requested to be different from the rest of the other female orisa when she would descend from heaven (Olurun), oshun asked Yemaya to give her the secrets so she may be different in appearance when she arrived to Ife, she desired to have a thin waist and her skin tone to be the color of honey, in exchange for this secret, she gave some of her Hair to Yemaya, oshun keeping the rest
using it to create the craft of Hair dressing which is still practice till today, The exchange of hair for beauty would be a small price to pay unknowing the true cost of being the most beautiful of the orisa. She was so divine that one night her father Olofin had to much palm wine, becoming to intoxicated causing himself to rape his Child, in this coarse oshun learned not only the emotions of Love but of hate and revenge, Those whom know of oshun know that she represents Love, Joy, Sexuality, Charity,, deep in her soul lies a bitter side,a stern dry demeanor, Hate, vengeance, bitterness are part of her inner personality. Oshun is the representation of The struggles of Life.  Oshun was designated by her father Olofin to be the chief priestess of the cult of the Ancestral Mothers the Cult of (IYA-LORDE) This commandment is stated in the Odu Oshe Tura, which is a cult still practice till this very day in Nigeria Africa, in the town of Osogbo. In the Odu Iroso Ka Orula certifies her the Apetebi and his wife despite her faults.  Oshun has influence the life's of all of the orisa in one way or another, in the Odu Ofun kana she saves Asowano (Babalu Aye) life, in Odu iroso ka, she saves the world from destruction, Orisa Oya from her enemies in the Odu Eyiogbe, in the Odu oshe Leso saves the love of Yemaya for Ogun. All of these endeavors have costed her the same
price, her body and Flesh.

Oshunʼs favorite sati-factional Husband is Orisa Inle(Water hole by the Streams or rivers, sometimes in the Woods) with which they had one child Orisa Logun Ede (The androgenesis)

I will write more on this orisa latter on, with Osha-Odduduwa (Spirit of the shadows or Darkness that brings Light) she gave birth to Orisa Oloshe with Osha-Orula(The Shadow that follower us,Witness of Creation) she had many daughters one in particular is Orisa Poroye, but the husband she had the most children was with Orisa Obatala (King of the white Clothe), which is why till this day, a majority of obatalaʼs Priests have oshun as their second guardian, or mother as some say. Oshun has many avatars or paths 29 in IFA/OSHA that can be crown a few more that are not, INCLUDING Logun Ede??? , many may ask why do orisa have these avatars, its because our religion is based on reincarnations, IFA teaches us that all of the Odu,Orisa and Osha have returned at one point or another back to heaven. when they returned back to earth they would state a different name or there carnal parents would name them differently if you understand African culture, when a child is born he or she is taken to a Awo a Priest of Orula so that childʼs destiny is revealed and is named. You ask Why the reincarnations? just like human beings the orisa have faults, they failed in performing the needed ebbos(Offerings) in heaven before there departures so they could have success in there new form, these ebbos were recommendations from the
Irumoles( 401 Divine spirits of heaven).

I am a Priest or Iworo of Oshun( Ibu Yumu ) my father is Obatala, my Iruko(name)is “Oşun mi esegun” “Oshuns my Victory” pretty Cool name, oshun has given me everything in my life in one form or another, sometimes even the things I should not have, but how can one learn if not through our pains and sorrows, donʼt get me wrong it has not been all negative, IFA teaches us that there is no bad luck, its that we didnʼt have the wisdom to obtain success. If I ask oshun for a Million dollars
and she grants me such a fortune, do I really have the knowledge on how to use the money. yet If I did ebbo and received the guidance on how too and what too spend the money on, would success not be by my side, would it not last my life time. One must always ask for (Itona) guidance first and our lives would run smother just like pouring honey. This is learn in Oshe Meji the arrival of riches on Earth, and in Ogunda Meji when the armaments, gems and mentals arrive on earth, from heaven.  I would like to mention thy most important Orisa to receive if possible, is ORI, its the orisa of your soul/consciousness its the orisa that enters our head at birth, it takes an oath in Odu Ogbe Odi before olofins feet, its oath is to live a certain life right before entering our mind. If Ori follows the oath Life is successful, if it faults hmmm, attempt to amend it ASAP. Our guardian orisa serves Ori, not the other way around. our orisa is our Crown, Ori lies in our head. Ask me questions for my next Blog post.

All of these oshun have many more secrets to add to her tool sets, from certain

Feathers, instruments, or elements. One of the tools in my set is a set of hair Combs,In my ita I ask “why the Combs? Baba said, When your hair is tangled up you use a Comb to remove or straight your hair, oshun uses this to untangle you from your Problems and enemies. These tools are asked or relate to your oshun, There are many offering one can give Oshun, there are some favorites of hers, or if in your heart you wish to give something, do it, no one refuses a gift right, just make sure its in good taste, oshun is Queen by birth right. Oshun is thy most important female Orisa in the yoruba system. I am not saying that Yemaya, Obba,Oya, etc are not, but Oshunʼs role in IFA/Osha are indisputable. All of Orisa, oshaʼs have there own Ashe Wind, fire, strength, but oshun knows how to tap these forces, using all of the I.O.Uʼs the other Orisa have with this majestic Queen.

Note:

On many of the names or paths of oshun are included a Odu, I will speak on my oshun

Ibu Yumu is born in Ika Meji the word IKa in yoruba means cruelty meji means double or

two, double crueltyʼ does this mean my path is cruel no! it means that there are many

things in her life that were, its a odu of strife and great gains, this Odu makes the arrival

of refined oil and fine string, these two object while in heaven were told to do Ebbo to

have great success on earth, they followed the guidance and when a Awo on earth was

in his darkest hour IFA told him” his ebbo required fine oil and string, and to light it with

fire, Awo IKA meji did so and obtained what we have now as oil lamps to light our

darkest Hour.

Although my oshun is born in IKA meji My opening Odu is Ogbe she, which is the Odu

of great power its the Odu Oshun herself nurtured, its folklore is of the African Grey

parrot. Its a odu of dis-considerations of others towards you, the Lore goes

That the African grey is Olofins favorite Bird, and made him laugh with his dancing, the

other Birds of the forest, hated him for this reason and plotted against the grey, so they

gathered powders of coal, and palm oil.

Olofin decided to invite all of his creations to a feast, expecting the Grey to arrive on

time to amuse him with his dance, The grey on his way to the feast was ambushed by

the other birds and they poured the coal dust and painted his tail feather with the red

palm oil, The grey had done Ebbo and didn't understand the cause yet, and was

concerned how Olofin would receive him in such a condition, but remembered the

advise of Ifa and went as is, olofin waiting became concern that the Grey didʼt arrive, but

short after the grey arrives with his Dance and Olofin laughing and enjoying the dance,

awaiting to approach the grey, the Grey offers his Moforibale to Baba and excuses for

his delay, Olofin ask what has happen to you, the grey explains of his misfortune on his

way to the feast, olofin becoming upset makes an Order address to all his creations, “

From this day Forth, Any and all Ebbo will contain the red tail feather of the Grey, When

there is a Yoko Osha, i will not give my blessings if there is no greyʼs red feathers at the

reunion TO BAN EhSU!

So when offering ebbo to which ever orisa there must always be a african grey red

feather in the ebbo so Olofin may receive it, this said My oshun warnings are that I

would live a life where people would not even open the door for my arrival because of

jealous, yet they are the one to lose the most, it makes my life a bit difficult too, but if I

do ebbo I will alway have success and favor of olofin himself. The oduʼs I speak of is a

vessels of great amount of information, this which I have share is but a faction, back to

My oluoso orisa (guardian)

in the odu marks my orisa to have a crown of grey feathers, oil lamps, to light my dark

hours, this odu also states when Ogbeshe is lanced we all shall eat well and prosper.

so one must look at the odu of ones orisa and her birth odu to be able to see what is her

advise to you, her struggles are not yours we at times state oh My Oshun behaves like

this or that, NO! those are hers to bear if you behave in that manner thats YOU! there

are some behaviors that are witnessed in her children but those are also defined by one

owns choice, or in up brings ethics etc. So if oshun went to bed with Ogun to fool him

into thinking it was Yemaya in bed, does this mean I would sleep with my brothers wife,

or sister husband to save there marriage HELLS NO! THIS BEHAVIOR IS NOT A

POSITIVE THING SO HOW CAN I EXPECT TO IT WORK OUT FOR THE BEST. I

could do is do ebbo for my brother or sister and have Oshun do her VOODOO lol in

solving the problem. lets use common sense Positive attracts Positive and Negative

attracts Negative

Information and Knowledge is to be used for growth not sold or Inherited How can we

become better if denied this basic Concept.

One of my favorite Quotes from Oprah Winfrey is

“When You Know Better, You Do Better”

so do better in your life, focus on Positive Energy, Everything in Life is made of Positive

and negative, in Negative transform it to Positive.
